Grocery Shopping – End of January 2018

Grocery Shopping – End of January 2018

One of my goals for the first quarter of 2018 is to spend no more than $350 on groceries each month. This does not include household supplies like paper towels, toilet paper, diapers, etc. The first week of January, I spent $108.14. The second week of January, I spent $84.59. The third week of January, I spent $167.36.

At the end of the third week in January, I had spent a whopping $360.09. Obviously, I knew I was not going to meet my goal of spending $350 on groceries in the month of January. But I wanted to finish this series because it has been interesting to really evaluate our spending habits in this area.

During the last ten days of January, I apparently went to the store ALL THE TIME. It’s no wonder it took me so long to write this blog post because I must have been too tired from all that shopping. It’s funny to see the trips numbered because it doesn’t feel like we are always running to the store. Let’s take a look at the damage…

First Trip – Smith’s

My first trip to the store for the period of January 21-31 was on Monday, January 22. I planned to make pizza that night, tacos on Tuesday, and baked potatoes topped with leftover taco meat on Wednesday. The balsamic glaze was for the pizza. I spent $48.41.

Second Trip – Sam’s Club

I also went to Sam’s Club on Monday, January 22, where I bought milk for $10.68.

Third Trip – Home Goods

Later that day, I also went to Home Goods. Home Goods may seem like a strange place to buy groceries, but they have a wonderful jam section. I needed (wanted) fig preserves for the pizza, but Smith’s didn’t sell any. I found some at Home Goods for $4.99.

Fourth and Fifth Trips – Smith’s

Our fourth and fifth trips to Smith’s are a bit of a mystery because I can’t find the receipts, but they both took place on Tuesday, January 23. Or so my bank tells me. Transactions don’t always post on the day they happen.

The first total was $5.67, and I have a vague memory of Mr. MLM going to the store for something and coming home with something plus a pie crust. I know I made a Meyer lemon pie at some point in January, using the leftover lemons from the second week of January.

For the second trip, I may have gone to the store for Diet Dr. Pepper. The total was $5.40, and that’s about what a 12-pack costs.

Sixth Trip – Walmart

Also on Tuesday, January 23, I spent $2.97 on chips at Walmart. The rest of my purchases were household goods.

Seventh Trip – Smith’s

My seventh trip to the store was on Thursday, January 25. It was a quick trip for chips, ice cream, and two Dole salad kits which were buy-one-get-one-free. I spent $10.46.

I bought chips two days in a row because I love them too much, Walmart is the only store that carries a certain kind I like, and Kettle chips were on sale for $1.88 at Smith’s.

Eighth Trip – Smith’s

This trip was on Saturday, January 27, and it is yet another mystery, but for different reasons. I have the receipt and I know Mr. MLM went to the store for sour cream for our dinner. He returned with sour cream and guacamole, for a total of $3.64. The mystery is – what did we have for dinner that night? Obviously, something Mexican, but I thought I made tacos the week before. This is what comes from blogging about your purchases weeks later and not taking good notes to refer to.

Edited to add: QUESADILLAS!

Ninth Trip – Sam’s Club

Also on Saturday, I went to Sam’s Club on Monday, January 29, and bought eggs and three bags of dark chocolate bark. Mr. MLM loves it, and it doesn’t look like Sam’s Club is going to restock it. I spent $21.42.

Addictive chocolate-y goodness.

Tenth Trip – Smith’s

Finally, I returned yet again to Smith’s on Sunday, January 28. I bought tortillas, pizza crust, yogurt, more Diet Dr. Pepper, more Kettle chips, apples, bananas, frozen waffles, two more Dole salad kits, red and yellow bell peppers, and bacon. I spent $37.86.

Total Spending

In total, we spent $151.50! This brings our total spending in January to $511.59, which is $161.59 over my ideal budget of $350. I have many thoughts on this experiment, which I will document in a post next week. Stay tuned!
